Atlanta bid for NASCAR Hall of Fame
Atlanta should know by the end of 2005 whether it will be home for NASCAR’s future Hall of Fame. Five cities submitted bids for the Hall by the May 31 deadline. Atlanta’s competitors are Richmond, VA, Daytona Beach, FL, Charlotte, NC, and Kansas City, KS.

Andrew Young International Design Competition
A design competition for a tribute to one of Atlanta’s leading citizens, Andrew Young, is set to begin in October. The concourse is open to all artists, designers and architects, with the goal of creating a living monument to the former mayor in a prime Downtown location.The tribute seeks to celebrate the life of Young – spanning his illustrious path from minister, to civil rights leader, to Congressman, to United Nations Ambassador, to Mayor and now self-styled “private sector diplomat." >>more

JSA-McGill Livable Centers Initiative (LCI)
IMPLEMENTATION UPDATE: Central Atlanta Progress (CAP) and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) have been awarded a 2005 Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) Supplementary Study program grant to further analyze the feasibility of converting Baker Street from one-way traffic to two-way traffic. The Baker Street feasibility analysis analysis is underway. Study findings will be finalized in March 2006. >> more

In December 2003 Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District, in conjunction with area stakeholders, completed a comprehensive land use and transportation planning study for the JSA-McGill corridor. The study was conducted with funding from a planning grant provided through the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Livable Centers Initiative (LCI). The study area focused on the east-west corridor in north Downtown Atlanta that includes the planned improvements to the Jones Avenue, Simpson Street and Alexander Street corridor (now Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard) along with the Ralph McGill Boulevard corridor and Baker Street corridor. Special focus was placed on the Civic Center MARTA station and the area surrounding the new Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola museum. >> more

Walkable Community Workshop
Downtown planners, traffic engineers, developers, residents and police officers put on their walking shoes to participate in a half-day workshop to learn how to make communities walkable and propose creative solutions to make Peachtree Street more pedestrian friendly. The workshop was sponsored by the City of Atlanta, Central Atlanta Progress, and Atlanta Downtown Improvement District thanks to a grant made possible by the National Center for Bicycling and Walking, the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Georgia Department of Human Resources. >> more

City Center Livable Centers (LCI) Initiative Plan
An alliance forged between the Atlanta Housing Authority, the City of Atlanta, Central Atlanta Progress, Georgia State University and the Historic District Development Corporation sought and received funding from the Atlanta Regional Commission to conduct a Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) planning study. This comprehensive study of Downtown's east-west axis focused on identification of key strategies to augment the transportation and built environment connectivity of the corridor's already booming development. LCI funding has been granted recently, making it possible to implement many recommendations of the study." >> more
