Grab your sunscreen, and get ready to play tough, because Atlanta’s athletic scene is about to become one sport larger this summer! The first Downtown Atlanta Beach Volleyball Tournament will take place in Downtown Atlanta’s Woodruff Park from Friday, May 13th to Sunday, May 15th.

For this three-day period in May, Woodruff Park will transform its traditional park environment into a sandy, beach oasis where spectators and fans will revel in Atlanta’s toughest, beachwear-clad competitors battling it out for the champion spot.

“Sand volleyball is a great summertime tradition,” said Alan Richardson, regional marketing manager for Starbucks. “This summer we hope that everyone will take the time to enjoy the season and remember summer for its carefree days and fun activities.”

“Atlanta needs a ‘fun-in-the-sun’ event that is different from everything else happening this summer,” adds Central Atlanta Progress’ Vice President of Marketing Wilma Sothern. “With a beach area in the middle of Downtown and stiff competition from a collection of the city’s best athletes, the Downtown Atlanta Beach Volleyball Tournament is going to be the event in May no one will want to miss!”

With 20 doubles round robin matches that will be seeded for a single elimination play-off, the tournament will feature non-stop action throughout the weekend. Volleyball Atlanta, Atlanta’s foremost volleyball authority, will organize and produce the tournament.
